Illustration Contest Winners: December 2007/January 2008

The poem:

Breakfast at THE SPOON
(Eggs served daily ‘til 12:00!)

by Lynne Berry

Alligator in an apron
opens up THE SPOON.
Alligator fries an egg
for Rex the old raccoon;
scrambles six or seven more
for Tortoise and the toad;
devils half a dozen
for a swamp rat on the road.

Alligator asks the time:
a quarter after eight.
Alligator scrapes a bit
of egg yolk from a plate,
then takes an order from an otter
heading into town:
“One dozen poached on buttered toast,
one dozen yolk-side down.”

Alligator asks the time:
exactly ten o’clock.
Alligator mixes up
egg salad in a crock.
He serves a sandwich to the skunk,
a sandwich to the skink;
extra mayo for the marten,
mustard for the mink.

Alligator asks the time:
a minute after noon.
Alligator says, “Yahoo!”
and closes up THE SPOON.
